our trip to insta-care

I was almost done cooking dinner. I had put it in the oven to bake, and was just about to wipe the table clean when I heard Z screaming. As I made my way to the doorway E came running to tell me her baby was broken, or something. I ran over to Z, who was standing by the bathroom door, and scooped him up. He looked and sounded like he was in immense pain. And that was when I saw his fingers.

C had been using the bathroom, and Z was trying to get in there, which is usual. C tried to shut the door to keep his brother out, also usual. Only, this time, Z's hand was on the door frame, near the hinges. When C shut the door (I'm assuming with some force) he crushed the last two fingers on Z's left hand. Now, I've seen fingers that have been shut in doors, but it has never looked like this. His pinky had a great indent in the center, his finger looked like it had been squished completely flat. His ring finger was indented, too. It wasn't quite as bad as his pinky, but still worse than I've seen in the past. It was scary, and it didn't help that my baby was inconsolable.

I knew Mr. Boss was on his way home, I knew he would be home soon, but I called him anyway and asked him to hurry. He told me to try to ice Z's fingers while we waited for him. When he got home he decided that we should take Z to an insta-care, and asked me to look one up. We probably weren't thinking straight, because instead of me taking Z by myself, we all went.

We were quickly placed in a room where we waited to be seen. Because it was a pediatric insta-care they had toys, paper and markers that were brought in to help keep the kids entertained, which was nice. Z had calmed down by then, and was playing with the toys and using his left hand. He seemed gentle and cautious in his movements, but he was wiggling his two, now very plump and swollen fingers, which was a good sign. But we were taken to get an x-ray anyway, just in case.

The good news: nothing broken.

We made it home just after 9'o'clock. Dinner was still warm in the oven, (we turned it off before we left, of course,) and we quickly ate, before sending the babes off to bed.

Before putting Z in his jammies, I got a band-aid to put on his ring finger, which is a little cut up. He was not happy about that band-aid. He hated it and wanted it off. I put a little glove on his hand, to cover the band-aid instead, and he seemed to be fine with that. Which means he is now sleeping soundly with a glove on his sad left hand.

I'm just glad he's feeling better.
